Heijo Scharff

Heijo has 20 years experience in the waste management industry. His main fields of interest include waste management policy, sustainable landfill, leachate and landfill gas emission reduction. Since 1996, Heijo has been responsible for Afvalzorg’s contribution to the Dutch Sustainable Landfill Research Program.

His other professional affiliations include: Chairman of the Landfill Policy Working Group of the Dutch Waste Management Association; Vice-Chairman of the Landfill Committee of the European Federation of Waste Management and Environmental Services (FEAD); Treasurer of the Sustainable Landfill Foundation; Chairman of the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) Sustainable Landfill Task Group; and Chairman of the TAC Working Group of the European Commission on landfill methane emission reduction.

   

Jay Warzinksi

Jay Warzinski is a Senior Regional Engineer for Veolia ES Solid Waste Midwest, LLC.  He is responsible for supporting regional management on all engineering functions, compliance, and business development opportunities in addition to providing direction to other regional engineers.  Regional Engineering functions include the permitting, design, construction, and operational oversight for landfills, transfer stations, and office and maintenance facilities located in Missouri, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin.  Jay possesses over 16 years of experience in the solid waste industry and over 25 years experience in the field of engineering.  Jay has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Marquette University.

Andrew Kosciuszko
Sydney Landfills Manager
Sita Environmental Solutions (Australia)

Andrew Kosciuszko has a degree in Chemical Engineering and postgraduate qualifications in Environmental Management and Marketing. He has broad experience in waste management together with wide experience in various senior roles, including operations, sales, marketing and business development in a number of major Australian and multi-national companies.

His experience in the waste management industry includes landfill operation and AWT approval, commissioning and operation and environmental services. He has also worked in a major consultancy as a Principal Consultant in Waste Management.

Andrew is currently working for SITA Environmental Solutions as the Sydney Landfills Manager and following the acquisition of WSN Environmental Solutions, his role covers the management of 3 landfills, with input into 3 other landfills.

Andrew is currently the Vice President of the WMAA NSW Branch and Secretary of the National Landfill Division.

Craig H. Benson, Ph.D., P.E.
Geological Engineering Chair
Wisconsin Distinguished Professor
University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA)

Craig Benson is Wisconsin Distinguished Professor and Chair of Geological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He serves as Director of the Recycled Materials Resource Center – which focuses on sustainable construction of transportation infrastructure; as well as the Director of the Bioreactor Partnership – an industry-academic partnership on sustainable solid waste management.

For 27 years, Dr. Benson has been conducting experimental and analytical research in geoenvironmental engineering, with the primary focus in environmental containment, beneficial use of industrial byproducts, and sustainable infrastructure. His research has included laboratory studies, large-scale field experiments, and computer modeling.

Dr. Benson has received several awards for his work, including the Huber Research Prize; the Alfred Nobel Prize; and the Croes Middlebrooks, Collingwood, and Casagrande Awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
