Weston Aluminium Logo.bmp               Weston Aluminium is a services company that provides innovative solutions to the aluminium and steel industries. Weston Aluminium adds value to its streams by manufacturing de-oxidants and ingots from its recovered aluminium metal, and transforms residual non metallic particles into various product streams referred to as ‘Aldex’ - including fluxes, desulfurising agents and slag conditioners for the steel industry, and raw feed for the cement industry.

In July 2007, Weston Aluminium established a new Alternative Materials Division to identify further opportunities and viable markets for the remanufacture and sale of Aldex, and to ‘close the loop’ on all by-product generation. The ultimate diversion of all by-products from landfill will dramatically improve the overall environmental performance and sustainability of the business.

The DECC Sustainability Advantage is proving to be a very successful incubator program for a suite of environmental and sustainability projects delivered thru new and extended public-private sector funding partnerships.

For example, the Sustainability Advantage building products cluster - 24 medium to large businesses - has identified potential opportunities to recover and reuse over 200,000 tonnes of industrial by-product waste resources currently going to landfill, including fibre cement, timber, glass, carpets, mattresses as well as liquid and solid waste from mining, aluminium, steel sectors. Millions of dollars of public and private sector funding is underpinning the necessary infrastructure development to support and encourage these initiatives.

Importantly, the opportunities and challenges already identified for increased business to business waste resource exchange and industrial ecology has recently inspired the establishment of new Sustainability Advantage clusters in the Illawarra and Hunter regions.
