WMAA is proud to announce the inaugural winner of the revamped Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA) 2016 Young Professionals Scholarship, Isabel Axiö, Waste Consultant/Environmental Manager at JustWaste Consulting.

Commencing in 2016, application for the scholarship involved a submission of an abstract to one of WMAA’s national conferences to be held in 2017.

The funding awarded to the winner provides an opportunity for a WMAA Young Professional to attend and present at a national conference, giving them exposure to industry and their peers.

Ms Axiö’s abstract submission to the WMAA 2017 Australian Landfill & Transfer Stations Conference was of extremely high calibre and relevance to the current issues facing the waste and resource recovery industry.

WMAA is seeking a volunteer to assist at the WMAA 2017 Australian Landfill and Transfer Stations Conference from 29-30 March in Sydney.

Your responsibilities at the conference will be to assist WMAA event staff with onsite registration, delegate queries, help during the Q&A sessions and other duties that might be required.

In return, you will receive a complimentary two-day conference registration, providing you with a fantastic opportunity to hear from national and international speakers and be part of Australia’s leading industry event.

Priority Engagement for WMAA in 2017: Submissions close soon!

Priority engagement

The WMAA Board has identified a number of priorities for engagement at both state and federal levels in 2017. The aim is to progress debate at the highest appropriate forum and secure practical, positive outcomes for the industry.

Your input is important and valued. Your responses will be fed back to the Board and State Presidents, to be incorporated into WMAA’s Business and Strategic Planning processes for 2017. The outcomes of which will be made publicly available to members.

The Clean Energy Regulator will hold the fifth Emissions Reduction Fund auction on 5-6 April 2017.

Guidelines for the auction are available here, with more than $400 million still available for registered projects to secure a carbon abatement contract.

Applications open for Round 4 Resource Recovery Facility Expansion and Enhancement Grants (NSW)

Applications are invited for Round 4 of the Resource Recovery Facility Expansion and Enhancement grants program. Delivered through a partnership between the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the NSW Environmental Trust, this program aims to increase recycling of household, business and problem waste.

Draft Guidance Statement: Separation Distances (WA)

WMAA government submissions

The Department of Environment Regulation (DER) published the draft Guidance Statement: Separation Distances (GS) for a public consultation period which closed in November 2015.

Since then, DER has been reviewing consultation submissions and was working to finalise the draft GS. At the same time, DER has been applying its risk-based regulatory framework to pilot assessments. DER has also been briefing stakeholders in relation to its Regulatory Framework.

The Waste Authority invites community groups with an interest in waste management projects in their local areas to apply for a grant from the Community Grants Scheme (CGS).

Community groups can apply for grants of up to $20,000 per project.
